5 a day classic tomato soup with carrot and red pepper

Today we’ll be tucking into another bowl of one of our 5 A Day soups! You don’t have to be a soup connoisseur to fully appreciate this British classic, a creamy and indulgent tomato soup! Our 5 A Day Classic Tomato soup is just perfect to soothe those cold, rainy days. As a result, it can even be enjoyed as a refreshing and tangy treat in the Summer. Read on to discover just how good our twist on this staple soup is!

What’s in a pot of our classic tomato soup?

As you can probably tell by now, we’re really passionate about achieving our 5 a day the easy way. We think that soup provides the perfect meal to do just this. Quick to prepare and full of goodness. Above all, every scrumptious pot of our Classic Tomato soup hits that 5 a day target as recommended by the World Health Organisation.

Every pot of Soupologie 5 A Day Classic Tomato soup contains: tomatoes, sweet potatoes, red peppers, carrots, onions, water, oil, vegetable stock, basil, salt and black pepper. Simple goodness, right?

Each 600g serving soup also contains: 215% Vitamin A; 50% Vitamin E; 171% Vitamin C; 34% Vitamin B1; 40% Vitamin B6; 62% Folate; 19% Pantothenate; 50% Potassium; 15% Iron; 27% Copper; 33% Manganese.

Our take on this classic soup accompanies rich tomatoes with the creamy and earthy goodness of sweet potato. Furthermore, you’ll also be able to enjoy the zingy and crisp taste of red peppers. This is also accompanied by the rooty, sweetness of carrots. Similarly, the balance between this sweet selection of veg and the slight acidity of tomatoes allows for a flavour combination that isn’t too overpowering but celebrates each component in their own right. You’ll find the texture of this soup is smooth yet thick and can even be enjoyed as the base of a pasta pomodoro sauce!

What’s so great about Tomato?

The star of this particular soup is the sweet, but tangy-ness of tomatoes! You might remember our blog post on foods that boost heart health that briefly highlighted the virtues of this fruit (or do you classify it as veg..?) Let’s do a quick recap! The rich red colour of tomatoes is provided by a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. This has many benefits but is renowned for preventing the build-up of free-radicals in the body that have been linked to various health conditions, such as lung, kidney & prostate cancer and heart disease. Tomatoes also aid our cholesterol by lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol and boosting “good” HDL cholesterol. Lower levels of lycopene consumption are also linked to a greater risk of heart-related ailments and strokes.

What about the rest?

Reaching our 5 a day target provides our body with all the vital vitamins and nutrients that we need to sustain a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

It should therefore come as no surprise that this fabulous collection of 5 A Day veg is just bursting with health benefits! Our soup is particularly high in vitamin A from all the carrots. The source of vitamin A in carrots comes from beta-carotene, a pigment that gets converted to vitamin A in our bodies. Vitamin A is essential for healthy vision, skin, hair and nails. When cooked, carrots contain three times more beta-carotene than eaten raw!

The other accompaniment to this soup, red peppers, should not be overlooked in favour of its fellow red colleague in this soup! In addition to being a source of lycopene because of its colour, red peppers have almost double the vitamin C content of green peppers and are much sweeter – green peppers are just unripened red peppers! By providing us with vitamin B6, vitamin C and folate, red peppers greatly benefit our blood health. These vitamins and minerals help to prevent anemia by aiding the absorption of iron in our bodies.
