Soupologie Profiling: Broccoli, Pea & Basil

Broccoli, Pea and Basil soup

Today we’re going to breakdown all the nutritional benefits of one of our most fragrant and refreshing soups: Broccoli, Pea & Basil! All Soupologie Soups are so full of goodness that we want to give each soup the praise it deserves and tell you everything that’s going on inside one pot of Soupologie!

Our soups sit on the shelves of Waitrose, Whole Foods, Planet Organic (or online at Ocado) and they look just as you would expect a fresh soup to look like. However, just like a superhero, they might seem ordinary but not all soups were created equal. Our souperhero-soups pack a huge nutritional punch, they’ll give you a vitamin kick, and they can read your mind. Okay, maybe not that last one – but only because we haven’t found a telepathic carrot.

Don’t forget our latest offer on Ocado for this month: buy ANY Soupologie Soup with selected Gradz Bakery bread and get 25% off!

So, without further ado, let’s jump into the pot!

Broccoli, Pea & Basil Soup

What’s in our Broccoli, Pea & Basil Soup?

Every pot of Broccoli, Pea & Basil contains: Broccoli, Peas, Onions, Basil Oil, Vegetable Stock + Water, Pea Protein, Oil, Garlic, Nutmeg, Turmeric, Salt & Pepper.

Per ½ pot of Broccoli, Pea & Basil, you will get 80% of your daily Vitamin C. As broccoli is rich in protein and we include pea protein, this soup is high in protein and fibre while also being 2 of your 5 A Day!

As always with our soups, Broccoli, Pea & Basil is entirely plant-based, gluten & dairy-free with no added sugars or anything artificial. The flavour is fresh from the peas, fragrant from the basil and has a lovely thick texture from the broccoli.

What’s so great about peas?

Peas are often viewed as a kids’ vegetable – mushed up or hidden under a fork. Or once, in my case, perfect for flicking at a friend while the teacher yelled ‘Nooooo!’ But did you know that peas are actually a legume, not a vegetable? That means they’re in the same family as beans, lentils & chickpeas!

As peas are a legume, they are high in protein and fibre, while being low in fat, carbohydrates & calories. They are a good source of Iron, Vitamin A, Folate, Vitamin B1, Vitamin C, Manganese & Vitamin K.

Green peas are also low GI (glycemic index), which means that your blood sugar doesn’t spike dramatically after eating them – particularly important for those with diabetes.

Similarly to kale, peas also contain the nutrients lutein and zeaxanthin. These are phytonutrients that have been shown to lower the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Fresh PeasWhat about the rest?

In our previous blog post, we spoke all about the benefits of broccoli, so here’s a quick catch-up: Broccoli is a good source of fibre, protein, Iron, Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamins A, C, E, K and a mix of B vitamins. Studies suggest broccoli is good for heart health, for lowering cholesterol and improving bone health (from the Vitamin K).

We add a sprinkle of pea protein into this soup to – no surprises –  boost the protein levels. Pea protein contains all 9 essential amino acids and is once of the more easily digested plant proteins (behind soy and chickpeas). As well as the protein benefits, pea protein is rich in iron. As iron from plants is harder to absorb than from animal meat, it is recommended that you consume pea protein with vitamin C. Which is great, because our Broccoli, Pea & Basil soup is naturally high in Vitamin C, giving you all-round nutrition without the need for a supplement!
