Soupologie Founders in Waitrose & Partners Weekend Magazine
Meet the producers
‘We started with pans of soup and a camping stove’
Amanda and Stephen Argent are the couple behind Soupologie 5-a-day soups
‘We’ve always eaten a lot of soup in our family. Stephen loves cooking, and when our daughters were small, they weren’t keen on vegetables, so he used to make really delicious soups with lots of veg hidden in them,’ says Amanda. ‘Friends started saying they were so good that we should sell them, so one year, we took a stall at a Christmas fair, made pans of soup and heated them on a camping stove. When we sold out in an hour, we realised we might be on to something.
‘I came up with the name Soupologie, because Stephen looks like a mad scientist when he’s inventing soups, and we sold from market stalls for six months, testing out what people liked. What struck us was how interested people were in what was in the soup. So we decided that we’d always make soups that were as nutritious as possible, as well as tasting really good, with green traffic lights in all categories, so people could enjoy
them without worrying about things like the sugar or salt content. We made them vegan and gluten and dairy free too.
‘We got the idea for 5 a day soups when I realised we were surrounded by fruit and veg, but even we weren’t getting our five a day – and when I researched it, I found that only 30 percent of people do, even though we all know we should do. We worked with nutritionists, to make sure we got the amounts right, and followed all the guidelines, and then it was a case of making sure the ingredients tasted good together. Stephen worked with our youngest daughter, Anastasia, on the recipes, and it took about a year to get the flavours just right. We ate a lot of soup that year!
Now we’re really proud of how the soups taste. We never wanted people to say, “I’d better have this because it’s good for me” – we want them to say, “This is really lovely, and it’s good for me.”’

5 A Day The Easy Way: The Facts Behind Soupologie’s Revolutionary New Soups
According to the NHS, 74% of the UK do not get their 5 a day, with the average portions of fruit and veg consumed just 3.6. Men are less likely than women to get their 5 a day, and 16-24-year olds are the least likely adult group to get their 5 a day.
Children are even less likely to get enough fruit and veg than adults, with only 16% of those aged 5-15 eating five portions per day. That means five out of six children are at a higher risk of nutrition deficiency as well as a variety of health issues in later life.
There must be a simpler way?
Why do you need to get your 5 a day?
The truth is that, according to WHO research, 85% of cancers are avoidable. Of these cancers, around half are related to bad nutrition; which can be avoided by consuming a balanced diet.
Getting your daily fruit and veg is one of the best ways to keep yourself healthy and ward off any illnesses.
80 grams of fruit or veg equals one portion, so you need to consume 400g of fruit and veg to get your 5 a day. However, some root vegetables like potatoes, cassava, and plantain don’t count.
Consuming just 200g of fruit and veg, roughly 2.5 portions or half your 5 a day, is enough to offer considerable benefits. Studies showed that a 200g daily intake reduced risks of heart disease by 16%, reduced chances of strokes by 18%, reduced risks of cardiovascular disease by 13%, as well as leading to a 15% less chance of premature death. What’s more, 200g fruit and veg per day has been shown to reduce the chance of getting cancer by 4%.
Why do people not get their 5 a day?
- Time – People nowadays are just so busy, turning instead to fast food to save time. There needs to be an alternative which provides them with all the nutrients and benefits that they need in one meal.
- Unaware of the health benefits – Many are not adequately informed on the health benefits that consuming your five portions of fruit and veg offers. For example, a high intake of fruit and veg has been linked with a 5.5 times reduced likelihood of developing stomach cancer. These are extraordinary benefits that people just do not realise.
- Taste – Some just do not like the taste of many fruits or vegetables. Sometimes this is because of not being introduced to many fruit and veg in childhood. Yet, eating your 5 a day needn’t be boring. Roasted, sautéed, mashed; there are a variety of ways to make getting healthy more fun and tasty.
- Misconception of cost – Fruits and vegetables are actually some of the cheapest items sold in supermarkets, especially compared to meats and alcoholic beverages. Yet some dismiss them as expensive without doing their research. Being healthy has never been so affordable.

11 Things to do with Sweet Potatoes
The pro list for sweet potatoes is long and sweet. They’re full of antioxidants, vitamins (A in particular) and they’re loaded with carotenoids. In addition to this, they’re also quick to prepare and are absolutely delicious. Should you have them in your diets? You bet your sweet patootie!
All of these reasons make sweet potatoes a favourite at Soupologie HQ, making them our go-to for office hunger emergencies (although yes we admit – sometimes we go for something a little naughtier when hanger strikes).
Today is National Sweet Potato day and, as its effects on the stomach tend to be a little friendlier than those induced by Pancake Day, we thought we’d compile a list of 10 things you can do with the wonderful root vegetable.
11 Ways to Enjoy Sweet Potatoes
- Make a soup with it (duh). Why not try our Sweet Potato Soup with Pistachio, Orange and Mint Pesto?
2. Make sweet potato burgers (our favourite Sweet Potato Black Bean Burger here, by the talented Minimalist Baker)
3. Make sweet potato wedges for those burgers (try Deliciously Ella’s recipe here). You can sub in spices like cayenne, turmeric, thyme, cinnamon and chili depending on personal preference.
4. Make a cute card for a pal or your crush (or download ours here).
5. Make a weird card for a pal or a crush (or download ours here).
6. Make a sweet (potato) roast. Cut your sweet potatoes into 1-2 inch slices, and mix in a bit of olive oil. Roast until tender and lightly browned and sprinkle with spices like cinnamon, chili, salt and pepper.
7. Treat your sweet tooth by making Sweet Potato Chocolate Tahini Fudge (vegan, gluten-free).
8. Or any of these other vegan desserts featuring Sweet Potato.
Sweet Potato Mash!
9. Make them Vertue-ous with Shona Vertue’s Busy Girls Sweet Potato Mash (we’ve adopted the vegan, gluten-free options)
- Ingredients: nut milk (around a quarter cup), half a teaspoon of coconut oil, 1 sweet potato and sea salt to season.
- Method: Roughly chop the sweep potato, wrap it into a paper towel and place in a bowl. Microwave for 6 minutes. Place the sweet potato, nut milk and coconut oil into a blender and blend to your desired consistency. [If you have more time or don’t want to use a microwave, the sweet potato can be roasted as well]
- Options: add your favourite herbs – turmeric, garlic or oregano all go great in this recipe. To add more colour, try using purple sweet potatoes instead.
10. Make a Sweet Jacket Potato. This super easy recipe features kidney beans and avocado. If gluten intolerant, ensure beans do not come with gluten-containing additives.
11. If you’re not in the cooking mood, try Soupologie’s Curried Sweet Potato Soup, currently on offer on Ocado.
And there you have it! 11 ways to celebrate National Sweet Potato Day. We hope one inspires some new recipes, or if we’ve missed your favourite way to enjoy sweet potatoes, please do get in touch – you might even win some soup for doing so.
Have a wonderful day, and namaste (it’s also Yoga Day),
